Predicted Liverpool XI vs Stoke City

Liverpool will be looking to defend their slim lead in the Capital One Cup semi-final against Stoke City when the two sides take on each other at Anfield on Tuesday evening. Jurgen Klopp’s men are high on confidence following a 5-4 win over Norwich City last weekend in the Premier League. On the other hand, Stoke City suffered a 3-0 loss to title-chasing Leicester City at the weekend, but despite losing to Claudio Ranieri’s men at King Power Stadium the Potters remained in the top half of the Premier League table. For Liverpool Philippe Coutinho, Joe Gomez, Martin Skrtel, Danny Ings, Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi remain in the recovery room, but Jurgen Klopp has no other selection worries.

FOOTBALL NEWS ALL OVER THE WORLD

Baggies value to sink Saints

Leicester: Face Aston Villa on Saturday evening

Swansea was the right match at the right time for Sam Allardyce at Sunderland but the opposite is probably true of their visit to White Hart Lane. Mauricio Pochettino and his team will be looking to bounce back from a defeat by Leicester which put a dent in their top-four aspirations and the Black Cats could pay the penalty. Sunderland and Jermain Defoe were given a helping hand by the struggling Swans but can expect no such gifts from a Spurs said that have been built on the foundations of a solid back five. They are predictably short to win the game in 90 minutes but the odds against about a Spurs win to nil does take the eye despite evidence to the contrary. It's been seven games (all competitions) since Sunderland last failed to score on the road in a run that's taken in Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal (twice) and Everton while Spurs have only won twice to nil at home all season but their defense is the meanest in the division and the side has the ability to dominate a Sunderland side that could be left to feed off scraps. Every point and every game counts for Allardyce but they entertain Bournemouth next weekend and that will be a game that the canny escape artist will have targeted as a better chance of collecting three points. Amid that torrid run away, Sunderland lost 3-1 three times and 4-1 once and throwing a few pence at similar scorelines in favor of the Lilywhites (12/1 and 20/1) does not seem like the worst idea while Harry Kane is 7/2 to open the scoring and 10/3 to score at least twice (as he has done on three occasions this term). Spurs to have a busy week with trips to Leicester (FA Cup) and Palace to come squad rotation but should enable Pochettino and his side to keep on pushing and with that in mind, I'll play the handicap markets. I toyed with prices around 7/4 for Spurs -2 on the Asian Handicap (stakes refunded if they win by two goals, the profit if three +) but instead I'll snap up the evens on the handicap -1 (they are also evens to be winning at half-time and full-time incidentally). They've beaten Man City, Norwich, Villa and West Ham by two or more goals at White Hart Lane and I struggle to see why they should not add to that list Sunderland.

CHIEF VIEW: WAYNE'S REALITY

Wayne Rooney: Fancied to score first against Liverpool
Wayne Rooney: first fancied to score against Liverpool

Matt Brocklebank Our highlights his best wagers during the current weekend's Barclays Premier League activity in his week after week segment.

Wayne Rooney has taken some stick over the past couple of seasons however he has his magic back subsequent to finding the net in his last three amusements and speaks to great worth to open the scoring at Anfield on Sunday.

Without a doubt, it's not time to begin escaping. The Manchester United chief was working at worryingly low levels prior this term in conveying only two objectives from his initial 15 group excursions, in spite of the fact that it merits calling attention to that his England strike-rate stayed as solid as steadily amid the same period, while he likewise enlisted a Champions League cap trap.

The civil argument over Rooney's hot dashes of structure corresponding with exchange windows and/or vital snippets of agreement arrangement is presumably one for some other time and another segment, and a more vital thought here is whether objectives against Swansea, Sheffield United in the FA Cup and Newcastle (two) constitute the begin of a honest to goodness brilliant spell, or a false sunrise.

Two of the last four strikes have been from the punishment spot, which barely offers much motivation, however the individuals who watched Tuesday's 3-3 draw at St James' Park will have seen a complete all-round execution from Rooney.

It was not only his trademark impact into the top corner, nor reverse the delightfully weighted ball which laid it on a plate for Jesse Lingard in the first half. He was cruising around the pitch and seemed to have time and space on the ball at whatever point under lock and key, to the degree that it couldn't just have been an impression of Newcastle's guarded abilities.

Rooney's record against Liverpool is shockingly direct. He sacked the victor in this installation in 2005 and set United on their way to a 3-0 win at Old Trafford last season, including only three against the Merseysiders in the meantime.

However, this Liverpool side look equipped for yielding against anybody. Jurgen Klopp's outfit have kept late clean sheets against Leicester, Sunderland and Stoke yet have transported no less than two in recreations with Newcastle, West Brom, Watford, London, Exeter and Arsenal in their last 10, while the Reds have just overseen two shutouts from their last 15 gatherings with United in all rivalries.

It's conspicuous both sides will be quick to declare some kind of predominance early this weekend and I'd expect a started up Liverpool to leave the squares rapidly.

Whether they're full scale to assault United from commencement is another matter however and if the initial 15 minutes go without an objective then a cagey diversion between two groups urgent not to lose could well create.

Klopp expressed after Wednesday's tussle with Arsenal that he will be boring his side once more over the guarded association, while Louis van Gaal is unrealistic to change the propensity for a lifetime after weak recognition from Paul Scholes in light of his side scoring three times at Newcastle.

All things considered, it's amazing to see no goalscorer third most loved in the right score market as short as 15/2 and the same cost about Rooney netting first makes much more claim in his present state of mind.

In the event that the guests can climate the early tempest, then I'd anticipate that them will demonstrate their pariah tag lost and the captain looks by a long shot the well on the way to be driving the way.

Another away side I'm quick to be with in some structure on the weekend's top-flight coupon is Norwich, who can be supported at 7/2 and greater to take each of the three focuses from Bournemouth on Saturday.

It's a totally urgent time of year for both sides, the exchange window regardless, and there's just two focuses between them in the table heading into the weekend.

Norwich have the high ground as of now yet nor is protected from the drop with Sunderland and Newcastle both demonstrating green shoots of recuperation of late.

Both advanced clubs have been liable of asserting they haven't been remunerated for their endeavors this term keeping in mind that is unmistakably been the situation on the odd event, neither has been sufficiently predictable for my enjoying.

The Cherries have created some staggering exhibitions however they were really level against West Ham in midweek and I figure they'll have to raise their diversion impressively to return to winning courses against Norwich.

Alex Neil's side weren't unfortunate at the Britannia Stadium yet the 3-1 result complimented Stoke, and however for Gary O'Neil's thoughtless red card then they could positively have something from the amusement.

The forcing Dieumerci Mbokani looks like being critical to their predicament and on the off chance that it's an away win at the Vitality Stadium then I'd anticipate that him will be included vigorously.

The Congolese striker is no insurance to begin however he's been given the gesture over Cameron Jerome in the Canaries' last three recreations and he's simply the sort to flourish against Bournemouth.

The hosts are famously feeble at set-pieces and have demonstrated helpless against an entire host of forcing focus advances as of now this year including Rudy Gestede, Christian Benteke, Wilfried Bony, Graziano Pelle and Romelu Lukaku, and Jerome in the converse apparatus, which Norwich won 3-1.

Mbokani invests a considerable measure of his energy in the punishment zone, scoring every one of the three of his objectives this season from inside or near the six-yard box, and he ought to be given bounty more opportunities to include to his count the south drift.

Tossing him into the wager helps the cost to 7/1 and that rates the top-flight wager of the weekend.

FOOTBALL NEWS AROUND THE WORLD

Wenger keeping the Gunners on track

Alexis Sanchez: Could be risked on Sunday

The Gunners were beaten 3-2 in London last December and Wenger and his players came in for criticism from angry supporters as they boarded their train back to London.

This season there is more goodwill from fans as Arsenal sit top of the Barclays Premier League despite conceding a last-gasp equalizer in a 3-3 draw at Liverpool on Wednesday.

And, despite his belief that there could be an escalation in such occurrences in the future, Wenger has no plans to change the way the team travel to Stoke - where Arsenal have won just once in the league in the last 25 years.

When asked if Arsenal would travel by train again, Wenger replied: "Yes. We travel in what we think is the best and the shortest way. You want as well not to be isolated because you want too much contact with people who love the club , you want contact with the fans.

Franck Tabanou: Returning to St Etienne

Tabanou joined Swansea in a £ 3.5million deal from the Ligue 1 club last summer but has found first-team opportunities extremely limited at the Liberty Stadium.

But the former France Under-21 left-back now seems ready to return to Les Verts in this month's transfer window.

"There is an agreement in principle between Swansea and #ASSE #Tabanou Franck wants to come back and I want to see Frank," St Etienne coach Christophe Galtier said on the club's official Twitter account.

Galtier said in L'Equipe: "We now need to make it contractual between all parties.

"I have not met Franck this week. He came to see his friends.

"But I hope he returns to St Etienne. This is where he feels best."

Firmino aims to build on the brace when Man Utd visit

Roberto Firmino scores a spectacular second goal against Arsenal on Wednesday

Gradually settling into Bahasa Inggeris football, the Brazilian has an extra weight on his shoulders in the absence of injured playmaker Philippe Coutinho. That added responsibility did not appear to be a problem as he netted a brace against Arsenal on Wednesday.

Firmino has played 48 passes into the final third, attempted 46 dribbles and created 24 chances for his team-mates. Improving his form suggests he has what it takes to silence United and further Ende himself to Liverpool fans.

4-3-3: Manchester United XI vs Liverpool - Carrick returns

Michael-Carrick

Manchester United take on Liverpool this weekend, in a fiercely contested fixture that historically produces goals galore. This game should be no different, with two sides who are struggling defensively at this current time.

The North-West teams are both battling for a place in the Champions League next term, and we've decided to have a look at the best possible XI for United, factoring in the current injury situation.

Wayne Rooney will once again lead the line, with Anthony Martial playing on the left and Jesse Lingard starting on the right-hand side.

The midfield three looks to have a nice balance about it, with Ander Herrera playing furthest forward. He'll have protection from both Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin in behind.

The back five will remain unchanged. David de Gea starts in goal, with Chris Smalling and Daley Blind in the middle of the field. Darmian and Young will play on the flanks.

League Cup on the backburner as Man City and Everton clash again

League Cup on the backburner as Man City and Everton clash again
League Cup on the backburner as Man City and Everton clash again
Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP

The two clubs met in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final at Everton last Wednesday when the Merseysiders got their noses in front thanks to a 2-1 win.

They will meet again in Manchester on January 27 to decide who gets to the final at Wembley, but before that face each other in the Premier League at Eastlands.

And Everton manager Roberto Martinez says it is important for his players to forget the cup for now and focus on the league showdown.

"The game on Wednesday is so important in the league for different reasons; they're trying to get that top spot and we're trying to get as high up as we can, and the three points are important in themselves," he said.

"So I don't think we need to look any further than that.

"Playing a team three times in three weeks will have a role in terms of how you prepare the game but not in a conscious manner."

Both sides are likely to show changes from the teams that met a week ago, with City's former Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling hoping to get a crack at his one-time local rivals.

"I've never come up against the same team as often as this and it is a pretty quick turnaround," Sterling said.

"But I didn't play in the League Cup semi-final first leg last week so I obviously hope to be involved this time.

"We know this is an opportunity for us but we just need to focus on what we need to do to win the Premier League and not worry about other teams and what they're doing.

"That way, we don't let anything affect our thinking and purely focus on our own performance.

"We've played a lot of away games over the past fortnight so we're looking forward to playing in front of our own fans again on Wednesday."

- Focused -

City, three points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, completed a run of four successive away fixtures with a 3-0 win at Norwich in the third round of the FA Cup last Saturday.

That win has kept Manuel Pellegrini's side on course for an unlikely quadruple of trophies domestically and in the Champions League.

City manager Pellegrini, who is likely to have Yaya Toure, Fernandinho and David Silva back from injury to face Everton, said: "It's very important to be focused game by game.

"We've played in the FA Cup and now we must return to the Premier League. We have to play two games at home and it's very important that we try to reduce the gap that we have with Arsenal.

"We have so many games to play in January that it is important to have the whole squad fit.

"The team played very well (at Norwich) and now we must choose which is the best team to start against Everton."

Also, the Germany worldwide turns into the fifth player distracted to United manager Louis van Gaal.

Antonio Valencia (foot), Luke Shaw (leg) and Marcos Rojo (shoulder) are as of now out while Phil Jones is unrealistic to highlight in view of his lower leg issue.

On the other hand, Ashley Young, Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin are liable to come back to the squad in the wake of being refreshed for the 1-0 win over the Blades.

Adnan Januzaj must sort his attitude out if he wants to be a star at Manchester United

Can this teenage prodigy go to the next level at Man United?

Adnan Januzaj has returned to Manchester following a disappointing loan spell with Borussia Dortmund.

The young winger was supposed to stay with the Germans until the end of the season, but the player asked to leave early and the Bundesliga club did not stand in his way.

With half the season gone, Januzaj failed to start a single game, with the manager, Thomas Tuchel, critical of the player’s attitude.

‘It is a pity he did not show the desire and attitude you need to progress at his age,’ Tuchel revealed.
‘My feeling was that he never was completely with us, that a part of him always stayed in Manchester and he compared everything here with United. We were not able to help him to shake that off.’

This isn’t the first time his attitude has been questioned, with Januzaj receiving bad press after turning down the opportunity to play for Belgium’s under-21s earlier this season.

Having played at the World Cup the summer before, Januzaj gave the impression he thought he was too good to play for a youth side.

Louis van Gaal claimed he thought Januzaj should have joined an English club, rather than making the move to a good club in Germany where he wasn’t guaranteed playing time.

It is clear now that Januzaj should have taken that advice.

There was no recall clause included in the player’s contract with Borussia Dortmund, which meant United didn’t have the possibility of bringing him back to Old Trafford if they had wished to.
However, now that Van Gaal has no choice but to have him in the squad, it will be interesting to see how Januzaj is used.

Morrison: Cup run still on the cards for West Brom

James Morrison is hoping to help Tony Pulis repeat his 2011 FA Cup run to Wembley with Stoke after West Brom drew their third round clash.

James Morrison spared West Brom's blushes with a late equaliser to force an FA Cup third round replay against Bristol City, but he believes a cup run is still on the cards for the club.

West Brom trailed Bristol 2-1 at home before Morrison struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time to keep his team in the hat for the fourth round draw.

Saido Berahino had put West Brom 1-0 up after 67 minutes, before Jonathan Kodjia and Kieran Agard scored one each to put the visitors ahead.

It made for a stuttering start to West Brom's campaign, but a drawn third round clash is familiar territory for manager Tony Pulis, who took Stoke City to an FA Cup final in 2011 after drawing their third round clash away to Cardiff.

Morrison is hoping for a similar achievement in 2016.

"The manager said after the game when he got to the final (with Stoke in 2011) he drew his first game at Cardiff," Morrison told the Birmingham Mail.

"There’s another chance to get into the next round which is the main thing at the end.

Premier League striker will snub Manchester United move – report

Romelu_Lukaku_3156402b

Manchester United Football Club are clearly trying to bring in a striker this January window, and one man who has been linked with an Old Trafford move is Everton’s Romelu Lukaku. However, according to the Sun on Sunday, the Belgian will snub any approach from Manchester United.

The English publication say that 22-year old Lukaku is happy with life on Merseyside, and wants to stay at Goodison until at least the summer.

It shows exactly what a sad state of affairs Manchester United are in at the moment, and its bitterly disappointing. You can hardly blame Lukaku for not wanting to come to the club, we play dull, lifeless football that isn’t at all attractive to watch, never mind participate in.

On the flip side of that, if we can somehow persuade him to join in the summer he certainly wouldn’t come cheap, and Everton will be looking to make a profit on the £30million they paid to land Lukaku from Chelsea.

Liverpool vs Arsenal: Arsene Wenger expects Reds' injury crisis to subside before Anfield clash

Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger believes Liverpool's injury crisis will subside before they take on the Gunners at Anfield on Wednesday, 13 January, despite the myriad of changes Jurgen Klopp made to the side which drew 2-2 against League Two outfit Exeter City. The Reds have 13 players out through injury but Wenger expects a lot of them to be back before their game against the Gunners, jesting that it has always been the case when they play a top opponent.

The Gunners are currently top of the league table, two ahead of Leicester City and have a run of three important games which can define their season ahead. The north London club have taken only two points from the corresponding fixtures last season and need to put up a much better performance if they have to come out with a considerable share of the spoils this time around.

Liverpool injury news: Mark Lawrenson expects Reds to welcome back Toure, Sakho and Ibe against Arsenal

Mamadou Sakho

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson expects the Reds to welcome back at least three players ahead of their game against Arsenal at Anfield, which would give them a fighting chance to put one over the Gunners and get their season back on track. The Reds currently have 13 players out through injury, including their first choice central defenders, but Lawrenson expects Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure to be back for the clash, which would give them some much needed solidity in defence against a fluid Arsenal front three.

Jordon Ibe is another player who was rumoured out with a hamstring injury but Lawrenson expects him to be back, thus filling up the numbers in what will still be a depleted side available for the manager. Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings and Divock Origi remain out in attack, while Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho are also on the treatment table.

FA Cup Hangover: Liverpool Get Lucky as Man United Hit Peak LVG Boredom Level

The montages were familiar, the starting XIs less so. Ronnie Radford will cash his royalty cheque on Monday morning just as he has done every year since 1972, while Keith Houchen is likely still getting up from a front-room reenactment of his diving header in the 1987 FA Cup final.

Chas and Dave and Ricky Villa are unlikely to be usurped by Brad Smith and the Kindergarten Klopps anytime soon.

The world's oldest cup competition is still capable of conjuring magic, as Exeter City, Oxford United, Eastleigh, Wycombe Wanderers, Portsmouth and Shrewsbury Town, among others to a lesser extent, will all attest. It's just when you can recognize as many names from Exeter's team sheet as Liverpool's, it's a bit like watching a tightrope walker with a visible harness. The spell is broken before it's even cast.

While projecting an illusion of interest, most Premier League clubs are as transparent as a David Blaine DVD replete with a "How to do it Yourself" extra. What Manchester United supporters would give to have Louis van Gaal ensconced in a glass box for 44 days. "Sorry, Louis, can't hear you. What's that? I think he's saying all-out attack..." Paul Scholes sat beneath the plinth in a rocking chair, frying bacon.
